Airless Definition

Airless spray refers to a method of painting that uses high pressure to spray paint or other materials. Airless sprayers work by forcing paint through a small tip opening at very high pressure; airless spray does not use compressed air.

Components of Airless

Airless spray systems have four components:

bullet

a pump

bullet

a high-pressure hoseairless sprayer compnets

bullet

airless gun

bullet

a tip

How it Works

bullet

Pump. The pump forces paint through the airless hose to a valve called a gun. (The valve is housed in a hand-held, handle-and-trigger assembly that loosely resembles a gun.)

bullet

Hose. The hose conveys the pressurized paint to the gun. Typical working pressures range from 200psi to 3000psi.

bullet

Orifice. At the front of the gun is the tip. The hole in the tip is called the orifice. The shape of the orifice determines the shape of the spray pattern.

bullet

Atomization. When paint is forced through the orifice at high pressure, the paint breaks up into microscopic droplets. This process is called atomization.

bullet

Application. It is the atomized paint that the painter applies to a surface.
