Tip Wear
Up

Tip wear has a big impact on the amount of paint used for a job. When sprayer performance degrades, first check tip wear. A worn tip reveals itself by producing a reduced fan width while the flow rate increases. The result is that a painter uses more paint to cover less area.

Example: Using a 517 tip

Applies .33 gallons Applies .36 gallons Applies .5 gallons
over a 10" surface over a 8" surface over a 5" surface

How fast does a airless tip wear out? It has be stated for companies like ASM, that airless tips can wear out .002 digits every 50 gallons of paint.  So basically if you start out with a 517 tip, 50 gallons later it could be worn out to a 519.

This figure can vary depending on the material being sprayed.  Flat wall paints have a lot of fillers and  are more abrasive, so wear faster.  Gloss paints have less fillers, so would not wear as fast.
